I used to think anyone with a New Year’s resolution was fooling themself. Every step in the direction of change was one they’d inevitably walk back. Why bother? But I’ve realized that, whether or not you stick to your resolutions, it’s worthwhile to take stock, to believe you can bring about a new and better future.
Though it’s taken me a long time, somehow I’ve become a big believer in the usefulness of fantasy. Earnestness, my finest quality and my cross to bear, does not have to be in opposition to imagination and the hope it totes around. See yourself on a tropical vacation, moving to Italy, playing in the NBA, flying on a rocket ship into the stillness of outer space? No matter what happens, real life is always going to be standing over you with a stopwatch. So take a minute to slip on those plush slippers of self-improvement and strut around. Don’t worry so much if you make it to your destination, first walk through the door.
For this New Year’s Day playlist, I’ve tried to find music that may facilitate renewal, even the desire for renewal. Change is ambitious, sure, but to combat the pull of darkness you need lots of light. The music on this playlist is clean, fresh. Piano, trumpet, silence. I hope that it will accompany an hour of peace and thought. All these songs are instrumental; you can decide if you have something you want to say.
Perfect for ears and minds when surrounded by shoppers. HNY!
Very interesting listen! Happy New Year.
