I am a lover of rock music, if a sometimes reluctant one. It’s a genre in which flashiness is often inherent to success. Showy guitars, bruising drums. Usually, I’ll bite. There’s a reason I love listening to the Grateful Dead so much. But making rock work on a small scale can be difficult. This month, Chris Cohen’s sublime album achieved the near impossible, delivering a big feeling with a small sound. I wrote about a perfect song from that record, along with 19 songs from other artists that, all told, make up the best music of July. (It was a happy and sad surprise to be listening again to Christopher Owens.)
In addition to the era-agnostic weekly playlists, each month Deep Voices aka me, Matthew Schnipper, listens to every song released in the entire world and gathers the best ones for paying subscribers. Subscribe now to get access to these monthly playlists and read notes on July, which was an incredibly bountiful month for music.
In addition to access to these exclusive editions of Deep Voices, paying subscribers get 15% off the (high quality, double-sided, made in America) Deep Voices T-shirts. Thank you ~deeply~ to all supporters of this project.
