Deep Voices #10 on Apple Music
I would love feedback about your experience with the newsletter and playlists. Twice a week too much? An hour the right amount of time? Too much weird stuff? Not enough? Just respond to this email.
If you’re enjoying the newsletter, I would be grateful if you’d forward to a friend and ask them to subscribe.
Playlist notes:
This year, Ben Bondy and upsammy put out two albums of funky digital percussion workouts that I love and favorite tracks from those are included here. Beatrice Dillon put out an incredible drum workout album too, but the track here is from a collaboration with Rupert Clervaux from late 2015. I’ve always been attracted to so-called “auxiliary percussion,” which means the little bells, gongs, shakers and other stuff a performer or group might add to the more traditional snare and tom. These artists are finding ways to make the auxiliary the focus. It’s fun.
Lots of drums in addition to those by the three artists mentioned above. I don’t remember how I stumbled onto Nyanyo Oddo’s music but it is extremely heavy. I generally dislike wooden flutes, but am making an exception here. 8ULENTINA, who co-runs the excellent Club Chai label, is one of my favorite current producers. They always make their tracks sound dense, but while managing to slither along at a rapid pace. Not totally sure if you can call what Buttechno is working with “drums,” but it’s very magical.
Working up to the block of drums, I love the Tim Story and Malibu pairing. Good music for floating.
John Adams is one of my favorite composers. Luca Guadagnino’s too. A few years ago I interviewed him about using Adams’ music in his films. He used the word “fantastic” four separate times.
