Deep Voices - Playlist #3
Thanks to everyone for listening. Let me know what you’re liking.
Notes:
Press play on most Hieroglyphic Being songs and you are likely to hear the crunch of a blown out drum machine. But “The Melody Lingers” is so clean. It reminds me of when you see precise sketches from abstract painters—they had to perfect the form before they could explode it.
Can’t stop listening to Ydegirl. If I was smarter or dumber, I would start a record label and sign her.
The Lo Yo Yo seem to be scrubbed from history, which I really can’t understand. They were a side project of Alig from Family Fodder, and a better band. Their single album was produced by Charles Bullen of This Heat and it’s easily as good as most of the better known bands on the poppier side of post-punk.
The Persuasions songs that bookend this mix are from their album of a capella Grateful Dead covers. They even do a version of “Drums/Space.”
Maurice Deebank was the guitarist for Felt for the first half of their lifespan. In my opinion, he’s as important to that band’s sound as Lawrence, the face of the group. He also seems to think so, as he’s said in interviews. He also appears to aggressively say this on Twitter and on message boards under a pseudonym. Either that or someone else is really, really devoted to making the case for Maurice Deebank’s historical importance. This song is from an instrumental, and mostly guitar, album he released in 1984. It’s a lovely album, totally overlooked (and available very cheaply used on vinyl). Love to Maurice, who I expect will somehow see this.
