Deep Voices - Playlist #9
This Thursday morning mix has a little more pep in its step than Monday. Hope you enjoy :-)
Playlist notes:
Glasser is a fantastic producer. She’s a beautiful singer, too, but her unique use of rhythm is really exciting. In 2018, she released a 15-minute piece, “Sextape” using chopped up samples of people discussing notable moments in their sex lives. It’s too long to include in a mix here, but it’s urgently worth a listen.
Trilok Gurtu is a legendary percussionist. I did not expect his new album, God Is a Drummer, to include a him, a 68 year old, yelling like a maniac. A very pleasant surprise.
Ted Hawkins’ “The Lost Ones” is unquestionably the best song I have ever discovered through Shazam. A longtime street singer, he has a sometimes sad story and should be much more celebrated. He sings from deep in the belly, stop you in your tracks raw. There’s a documentary about him on YouTube, narrated by Harry Belafonte.
Apple Music users, you’re missing a track that is not on the service—“Free” by Phil Seamen. It’s a vibes-heavy jazz song with eerie toms that sound recorded in a different room. It’s from 1959 but it sounds totally contemporary and it goes between Ted Hawkins and DJ Roc. Guess you will have to do your best to imagine it.
