So glad you loved “Serenade”! There’s something open and honest about what Demac’s doing that I always heard in the song that’s somewhat rare, especially in Kompakt music which can often be super tart and ironic and formalist (nothing wrong with that, I think I first heard the song on a Kompakt sampler). He doesn’t do anything dramatic, but the way the song and the spoken word interact seems to make the meaning change over time.
Under-loved songs—what a great idea to ponder! Picking one from my own collection proved impossible—so I just made a new playlist and it turned out to be 118 obscure songs long. But at least from now on they’ll get more love from me even if the rest of the world never hears them! Thanks for the suggestion
What an excellent project! I organize a daily walking/running program at my kids’ school. I’ve challenged myself to bring these little ears music they wouldn’t hear otherwise (that also meets the ‘sitting next to the principal while the lyrics are real aloud at a deposition’ test). Creating these lists has been a cool way to expose the kids to new music, and it’s really gratifying when the parents let me know they appreciate the playlists, too. You’ve given me a new treasure trove to explore for next year.
I was going to move on until I saw the Kenny Wheeler/Floating Points comment - I stumbled here through a rabbit/wormhole. I still listen to songs from when in was in high school in the 70s, and jazz. I will try Serenade, and offer in return A World Apart by the Manhattan Transfer (actually the leader singer OWNS this song). If Adele sang it, or when Taylor Swift covers it in ten years, hearts will be crushed, especially when the listener realizes it isn't about a distant lover but a much more melancholy separation.
